The 'B' Side finds Fukui taking a bluesier approach, first on "Willow Weep for Me," then on another jam-session-y version of "Autumn Leaves." Fukui blueses up the tunes, but still often lacks any sense of nuance in phrasing or overall shape of his solos. He also takes advantage of the harmonic simplicity of the tune and seems to be channeling McCoy Tyner more than Evans, with some nice quartal playing that gets fairly harmonically adventurous at times. Here Fukui finally shows some melodic creativity with long, chromatic phrases and some effective crossrhythms. A funky modal vamp defines the melody and the beginning of Fukui's solo, though it gets quite a bit more interesting when the trio shifts into a double-time swing. The real high point of the album is Fukui's original "Early Summer" which finally deviates from the simple jam session approach and relaxed mood of the rest of the tracks. "I Want to Talk About You" is fairly similar but with a more relaxed, ballad approach. Denpo and Yoshinori Fukui swing along fairly well, though they also do little to encourage any interesting obfuscation of the form, giving the tune the feeling of a jam session. Instead, Fukui tends toward short, diatonic phrases, that seldom move outside the natural phrasing of the tune. His style of left hand comping and bouncy swing feel seem directly influenced by Evans, however Fukui often lacks the chromatic, lyrical melodic drive and adroit phrasing that makes Evans' playing such a joy to listen to. It's obvious from the first track, "It Could Happen to You," that Fukui draws a lot of influence from Bill Evans. It's a simple piano trio setup with Fukui accompanied by bassist Satoshi Denpo and drummer Yoshinori Fukui. "Scenery" is the debut album, and one of the few recordings made by Japanese pianist Ryo Fukui. A mostly average trio release, demonstrating competency, but little creativity or nuance Convert your pdf document to csv and other formats online in a few seconds. Window and door rough openings in the ICF wall are surrounded with pressure-treated wood (Source: Oak Ridge National Laboratory). Special molded corners provide continuous insulation layer at the corners to improve structural strength and minimize thermal bridging (Source: Portland Cement Association). Figure 5. The blocks stack to form walls. Ledgers can be mounted to the blocks for attaching floor framing. Lumber blocking is also needed where bearing pockets are required for floor or roof supports. Window and door openings must be framed with lumber (Figure 6). Most manufacturers make specifically molded corner blocks that provide a continuous layer of foam around the corner to reduce thermal bridging there (Figure 5). ICF systems are installed in a manner similar to masonry, starting at the corners and placing a layer at a time to build up the wall. Figure 4. Different types of ICF blocks (Source: Oak Ridge National Laboratory). Figure 3. Three common ICF wall systems: the flat wall, the waffle wall, and the post-and-beam wall (Source: Oak Ridge National Laboratory). The post and beam ICF wall system has vertical and/or horizontal concrete members spaced farther than 12 inches on center. The screen-grid ICF wall system is similar to a waffle-grid ICF wall system without concrete webs in between the vertical and horizontal members. The waffle-grid ICF wall system is a concrete wall composed of closely spaced vertical (maximum 12 inches on center) and horizontal (maximum 16 inches on center) concrete members with concrete webs between the members. A flat ICF wall system is a solid concrete wall of uniform thickness with sheets of insulation forming the interior and exterior surfaces of the system. Figure 1. ICFs provide continuous wall insulation from the roof to footing with very little thermal bridging the ICFs in this home in Las Vegas provide R-40 wall insulation (Source: Department of Energy).įigure 2. The ICF consists of wall forms made of rigid foam blocks or panels that are held in place with plastic or metal spacers and reinforced with metal rebar (Source: National Research Council Canada).Ĭommon types of ICF walls are shown in Figures 3 and 4. Some ICF walls consist of two layers of concrete sandwiching a central layer of foam. A few products are made with recycled foam or wood. Some ICF products use extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam, which is stronger but more costly. The foam is typically expanded polystyrene (EPS). Some ICFs come with plastic nailing strips embedded in their exterior surfaces. Steel rebar is added to the cavities for additional strength (Figure 2). The blocks are stacked like bricks to create the wall forms for the concrete. The ties hold the foam panels 6 or 8 inches apart during the pour and remain in place afterward. Foam blocks are typically comprised of two 2-inch-thick, 16 by 48-inch rectangles of foam that are connected by plastic, metal, or foam ties. The foam forms stay in place, providing permanent insulating foam layers on the interior and exterior of the wall. ICFs are typically made of pre-molded blocks or panels of rigid foam, which are assembled on site to create wall forms into which concrete is poured (Figure 1). ICF walls have almost no thermal bridging in the wall itself and, with proper design details, thermal bridging can be almost eliminated at the rim joist as well ( Petrie et al. Studies comparing ICFs with stick-frame construction have shown that in otherwise identical homes, the ICF houses had a 9% better whole-wall R-value and were 10% more airtight ( Christian 1996). Insulated concrete form (ICF) construction combines concrete and rigid foam for walls that are thick, sturdy, and continuously insulated. So it’s essentially up to you how much you want to disclose around the exit. “You don’t have to tell somebody everything,” she says while adding that in most cases, employers won’t go through the hassle of writing a negative reference but merely a curt confirmation note that you worked there. Zahra Amiry, Omnicom Media Group’s associate director of talent attraction insists workers can be as vague as they want to be when discussing their reason for being let go. If the hiring manager can’t appreciate that, then that’s one more firm to cross off your list of companies you want to work for.” What to do when the career gap wasn’t out of choiceĮven in the case where you were unceremoniously sacked from your last job and have been struggling for months to find a new one, honesty is still the best policy-but that doesn’t mean you have to disclose every detail surrounding your time away from the workforce. “My advice was to be completely honest with why they left. “I spoke with someone who just left a job without another one to go to-the culture was too toxic and they just had to make a change,” Maleh says. Plus, an employer’s understanding-or lack thereof-around time away from work can clue candidates into what their company culture is like. Basically, candidates who write off their career break are actually wasting the chance to add color to their application and stand out. It’s why even LinkedIn now has a career breaks feature so that users can demonstrate the skills learned away from the desk on their profiles. Taking time off work to travel, raise a family, change the direction of your career, or even for headspace are all valid reasons that, she says, “can demonstrate values, behaviors, and ambitions in a way that traditional career paths often can’t.” “Where previously workers might’ve been grilled about what they were doing during these periods, hiring managers are now much more open to hearing about the skills and experiences you’ve earned outside of the nine-to-five,” says Katherine Jackson, regional director at Michael Page. In recent years, the working world has changed, and so too have employer’s attitudes. Lewis Maleh, CEO of the global executive recruitment agency Bentley Lewis, warns that such a lie won’t just damage the relationship with a prospective employer, but “if you get found out it can result in instant dismissal, loss of trust, and a bad reputation that can follow you through your career.” Honesty is the best policy So the short-term benefits of lying about your whereabouts are outweighed by the high chances of getting caught. Plus, thanks to the prolific use of social media, it’s never been easier to cross-verify information provided by candidates. “Unless you work in a function or industry where an NDA is typical, prospective employers will quickly see through the lie,” career coach Dr. So using it as a way to explain a career gap could make it look like you’ve been caught up in something unsavory-or are making it up. It’s why the handful of recruiters Fortune spoke to said they rarely come across NDAs. As such, they were often employed to keep negative situations like sexual harassment claims quiet (a recently banned usage), or reserved for senior staffers with insider knowledge whose revelation would harm the business. Nondisclosure agreements, sometimes known as “gag orders,” are used to prevent staff and ex-staff from making private business information public. But really, recruiters tell Fortune that saying you signed an NDA might raise red flags. The settlement here was called Prigmore's Swamp (1681–1697), then known as Inian's Ferry (1691–1714). The first European settlement at the site of New Brunswick was made in 1681. The area around present-day New Brunswick was first inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, whose Minisink Trail intersected the Raritan River and followed a route that would be taken by later colonial roads. Growing Asian and Hispanic communities have developed around French Street near Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The Hungarian community continues as a cohesive community, with the 3,200 Hungarian residents accounting for 8% of the population of New Brunswick in 1992. At one time, one-quarter of the Hungarian population of New Jersey resided in the city, and in the 1930s one out of three city residents was Hungarian. New Brunswick is noted for its ethnic diversity. New Brunswick has evolved into a major center for the sciences, arts, and cultural activities. The corporate headquarters and production facilities of several global pharmaceutical companies are situated in the city, including Johnson & Johnson and Bristol Myers Squibb. Due to the concentration of medical facilities in the area, including Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and medical school, and Saint Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick is known as both the Hub City and the Healthcare City. The Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program calculated that the city's population was 55,998 in 2022, ranking the city the 712th-most-populous in the country. The city is located on the southern banks of the Raritan River in the heart of the Raritan Valley region.Īs of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 55,266, an increase of 85 (+0.2%) from the 2010 census count of 55,181, which in turn reflected an increase of 6,608 (+13.6%) from the 48,573 counted in the 2000 census. New Brunswick is on the Northeast Corridor rail line, 27 miles (43 km) southwest of Manhattan. A regional commercial hub for central New Jersey, the city is both a college town (the home of Rutgers University, the state's largest university) and a commuter town for residents commuting to New York City within the New York metropolitan area.
